Lineage Basics Class (LBC) is TBAT's FREE genealogy education program designed to help you begin or strengthen your family-history research.
Whether you're just getting started, already building your family tree, or you've reached a research roadblock, LBC provides guided instruction, practical resources, hands-on research, and continued support to help you move forward.
Before TBAT began providing formal services, free genealogy classes and education were foundational to our work. LBC continues that commitment by giving people the knowledge, tools, and support needed to research their own family lineage.
Lineage Basics Class is an interactive genealogy learning experience not simply a presentation. Participants work on their own family research while learning how to locate records, evaluate information, build their family tree, document findings, and work through common research roadblocks.
You don't need genealogy experience to begin.
You just need somewhere to start.
Through guided instruction, hands-on research, homework, and your one-on-one follow-up, you'll learn how to:
Build and strengthen your family tree — organize what you already know and identify what information is still missing.
Find and use genealogy records — learn how to locate and work with census records, vital records, historical records, and other research resources.
Research with purpose — develop basic research methods instead of simply collecting names and documents.
Evaluate your findings — compare records, recognize inconsistencies, and document the information supporting your family connections.
Work through genealogy roadblocks — learn strategies for when records are missing, information conflicts, or your research seems to stop.
Prepare for your next genealogy step — understand where your research stands and whether continued research, additional education, or lineage verification may be appropriate.
After LBC and your one-on-one genealogy follow-up, your next step will depend on where you are in your research, what you've discovered, and how you want to stay connected.
From there, you may:
Continue Your Genealogy Research — keep building your tree and applying the research skills and resources you've learned.
Explore Lineage Verification — when your research is ready, learn more about TBAT's Lineage Verification Service and the verification process.
Connect With Community — explore connection through a Lineage Alliance Network community or collective.
Volunteer & Serve — put your skills, interests, or time into service within genealogy or another area of the cooperative network.
Connect Your Business — business owners can explore Business Care and connection through the Black Heritage Network.
Keep Learning & Building — participate in continued genealogy education, shared research opportunities, and other TBAT pathways as they become available.
Whether you're beginning your family tree, strengthening research you've already started, or trying to work through a genealogy roadblock, LBC gives you the education, resources, and support to keep moving forward.
You may register for class before completing TBAT Info Orientation; however, Info Orientation must be completed before attending your first LBC session.
